I met a few people in my neighbourhood who passionately blame the society we are living in for how selfish people are, and how materialistic people have become, especially in a city like London.
I told them that Buddhism is strictly based on cause and effect, and that the environment you live in is also based on your Karma, which was created by yourself in your past lives.
If you can think like that, instead of blaming other people selfish behaviour, you can change yourself first through the chanting practice (Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo), transform your own negative Karma into good fortune, and purify your mind and five senses.
Aiming for your inner-self to be filled with virtues of Buddha Nature, you will experience great joy within yourself, and that will reflect on the environment you are living in.
If you want to understand the causes that existed in the past, look at the results as they are manifested in the present. And if you want to understand what results will be manifested in the future, look at the causes that exist in the present. (The Opening of the Eyes, Shinpen Gosho, p. 571)
